The Impact of Color Psychology in Web Design

Colors do more than add visual interest to web design. Much more. Infused with deeper meanings, colors can influence perceptions, moods and actions and ultimately determine the effectiveness of your entire design. Psychologists have determined some universal truths about color’s effect on the psyche. Understanding these color concepts can help you affect the minds and motivations of users though the simple choice of color.

Black
The color of power and sophistication, black creates an immediate sense of timelessness and style. It is often used in fashion for a chic impression, as well as to express aloofness or evil.

White
Purity and innocence are associated with white. It reflects light and exudes a sense of ease and relaxation. In design, white is often associated with corporations and professionalism.

Blue
Tranquility and peacefulness are conveyed by the color blue. Companies often use blue to express loyalty and trust.

Red
The opposite of blue, red is an emotionally intense color that often suggests anger or aggressiveness. Use red carefully in your design, more as an accent color than a primary element.

Green
As the color of nature, green is refreshing and calming. Bright and muted greens can appear friendly and approachable, while dark greens imply wealth or conservatism. Keep these distinctions in mind with your design.

Purple
Luxury, wealth and royalty are associated with purple. This feminine and romantic color is often used for fashion layouts to create a sense of high style.

Yellow
Optimistic and cheerful, yellow easily captures attention with its stimulating effects. Use yellow sparingly in your design since too much can be overpowering.

By having a solid grasp on the psychology of colors, you can use them in a more meaningful manner for maximum design impact.
